Iyengar Yoga

Picture
Iyengar Yoga

BKS Iyengar was a yoga innovator and scholar that standardized a system of instruction that continues to traverse continents and languages.  “Iyengar Yoga” is a designation that can only be used to describe classes taught by someone that has undergone the process of becoming a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT).  Those trained must exhibit the ability to clearly demonstrate asana and understand use of props when appropriate to help students safely access poses and experience body awareness.

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs)

To begin the Iyengar certification process a pupil must have studied for several years and be nominated by vetted teachers.  The next steps include a written exam about yoga philosophy, anatomy and health precautions followed by an impromptu teaching demonstration and demonstrated practice.
