Required Texts/Materials: There is NO textbook to purchase for this class as we will utilize OER Open Educational Resources that are embedded into our Canvas modules. Other Requirements: Speeches Required: Each student will prepare throughout the course speeches of specifications for presentation in class and practice outside of normal class hours.
Failure to complete any given speech assignment will result in a failing grade regardless of the grade in the class otherwise. A student must complete all minimum requirements of all speeches in order to pass this class (examples: all speeches and all minimum speech times and source requirements etc.)
Zoom Participation Required: You must login to class and present your speeches live to an online audience (using Zoom). As both a speaker and audience member you should address the following areas to ensure your success
Internet Connectivity- If possible login via ethernet connection meaning a computer plugged directly into internet from the wall. Minimize the distance and obstacles between you and your router is 2nd best. Limit the number of people in your household using your internet on days you are required to present speeches. If you are logging in using 5G find an area with as many bars as possible. On your speech day it is a good idea to check your internet speed to make sure you will not have any lag or disruptions to your presentation. You can use a free website such as https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Sound- Ensure that computer/phone sound works. Make sure that your microphone is not covered. If you prefer headphone make sure they are fully charged. You can log into zoom with both computer and your cell phone using the phone for audio only—this will decrease the strength of wifi required and make sure you are heard clearly. Though an uncommon problem it is notable that some headsets do not work with Zoom and you should practice with your headset before presentation day.
Video- Verify you are visible and don’t have anything distracting or inappropriate in the background. Follow instructions to be sitting or standing but never in prone laying position. Have a front lit lighting space to ensure that the audience can clearly see you.
Name-Your name in zoom and other online class spaces should match your full name as displayed in canvas. If canvas gradebook lists your name incorrectly please contact your instructor for assistance in resolving this error. However, no nicknames or shorthand should be used in virtual space.
Practice -logging into Zoom to help determine how you to achieve the best internet connection. You can always do a practice zoom call by asking any questions you have to BC Student information desk Mon-Thur 9 am-6pm.
Coursework: Students are expected to read and watch content in modules, complete the related quizzes in Canvas, journals in Canvas, prepare outlines for speeches, practice speeches, evaluate peers, and give graded presentations in class. Time Required to Complete Coursework: This course is based on the “Carnegie Unit”. It is expected that you will devote 2 hours outside of class for every hour we spend in class. Make sure you have 12 hours a week available to devote to your work for this class. RULES FOR ONLINE STUDENTS: When connecting via zoom here are few things I DO recommend. Wear clothes. Please. Participate. Speak up! Ask Questions! Try and Keep your Camera on throughout the class. Consider “muting” yourself after checking in. Know how to mute yourself / unmute when participating. As aforementioned, you will not get credit if you connect via zoom without the ability to speak. Prepare for class including assigned readings & practicing your own technology before class session. Tend to family emergencies (let your instructor know in the private chat screen). Use the private chat screen. Understand that this is awkward. Be kind to yourself and classmates. Use the reaction emojis during class speeches, discussion & lecture. Do find a spot for your virtual office to be set up and keep camera stationary. Do understand “private” chat may not be private. The instructor is sent a copy of chat after each session which includes private chats. Do turn on your camera when we move to breakout rooms. This improves everyone’s experience when we are working in small groups. Do review class recordings if you misunderstood, lost connection or missed a class session to help you catch up. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to review the recording found in canvas. Interact during breakout rooms with class sessions.
When connecting via zoom here are few things to NOT do: Don’t clean your house during class. Don’t turn your camera off because you overslept Don’t eat on camera. (If you must eat during class, make sure you’re muted!) Don’t be afraid to ask for help or “office” consults Don’t drive during class. Don’t miss class—you can do it—almost—anywhere! Don’t play games/watch videos/use social media during class Don’t assume a negative ‘tone’ from others. Don’t lay in bed holding camera and constantly moving it. Don’t work out during class. Do NOT record, screen capture or violate the privacy of any other participants in the class or distribute any part of virtual class interactions. Misuse of any part of class materials will be reported to student affairs. Miss class because you are confused. Confusion was never improved by not showing up for your life and your instructor does take daily roll and track participation in class activities.
