Canvas and Your Grade Your final grade will be determined from the percentage reported on your Canvas Gradebook. It is your responsibility to monitor your progress in this class on Canvas and be aware of your grade, if assignments were graded, if there are mistakes in points, etc. Your education is your own personal responsibility. I do not search you out to inform you of your grades—I expect you are watching Canvas or keeping track of them yourself. If you find an error, please email me. If there is an error on Canvas and you tell me AFTER I’ve submitted your final grade, I may not change your permanent grade.
Speeches All speech descriptions can be found on the Canvas website. Speeches are always due on Sundays at 11:59pm, during the odd numbered weeks in class (weeks 1, 3, 5, 7). Check the Schedule tab at the top of the webpage to check the weekly schedule. These will be recorded speeches, submitted to a Discussion Board post on Canvas. Students will be required to comment on peers’ speeches. Our last three speeches will have Preparation Outlines along with the recorded videos which will have a separate assignment for submission.
Speech Submission Requirements
Students will be required to record themselves for four speeches and submit the video recording to a class discussion board for feedback.
In order to meet the CSU General Ed. Area A.1 Oral Communication requirement, students MUST present their speech in front of a live audience. This needs to be in front of people you live with, work with, or friends or family. I am requiring at minimum of two audience members, you may have more. Due to the pandemic, if you live alone and/or do not have people to present in front of comfortably, you will need to arrange Zoom times, FaceTime, Skype, Google Meet, or other online media to log in with friends or family (minimum of two other people) and present and record the speech with them visible in gallery view in the beginning (have them say "Hi" and then you can change to speaker view). Audience members can't just be blank icons, we need to see a face or har a "Hi." Students who fail to show two live audience members in a speech will receive a letter grade deduction for that speech. I have a "How To" record over Zoom instructional page in Canvas.
Your videos and entire speeches need to be unedited and be in one “take.” No cuts, start & stopping in the middle of the speech, etc.
Your audience needs to be visible in the recording at some point of the video, usually the beginning. Use your cell phone or other recording device and “scan” the audience members, then seamlessly in one take, hand the recording device over to one audience member who will finish the recording focused on you, presenting your speech. Your audience members do NOT need to stay in the video the whole speech.
Students have two options to submit videos to the discussion board. You can use a YouTube channel (can stay “unlisted,” not private. We can’t see private) and share the link to the discussion board OR you can use Canvas Studio in our Canvas course. I have an informational page with videos in Canvas on how to do these things.
Please make sure your video is clear with appropriate lighting, we can clearly see your face, and your audio is clear.
Please show shoulders and up in your videos.
Appearance: You are your own best visual aid! You do not need to dress up; however, you want to look nice for your video. For the visible parts in the video recording, avoid: hoodies/sweatshirts, gym clothes, athleisure, baseball hats, beanies, shorts, graphic T-shirts, pajamas. You can wear jeans and plan t-shirts. Not following instructions could impact your professionalism score in your speech grade.
Please keep background distractions in your video to a minimum.
Online AssignmentsAs an online, 16-week course, students will be expected to complete assignments online through Canvas every week. All assignments are organized in Canvas Modules, labeled by Due Date. Students will complete one Module per week. Many of these assignments will be due the same day as a speech, so plan accordingly. This course includes weekly reading quizzes, discussion boards, online assignments, outlines, and speeches. It’s the responsibility of the student to check Canvas weekly for assignment updates.
